Over the decades, she worked across multiple divisions, including Dredging, Engineering, and Maritime Operations, before playing a key role in the Panama Canal Expansion Program, completed in 2016.
Her leadership was further recognised in 2019, when she was appointed Deputy Administrator, a role she held until her recent promotion.
Strategic Vision 2025–2035: Water, Ports, and Energy
Espino de Marotta’s term will be defined by the Panama Canal’s 2025–2035 Strategic Vision, a roadmap aimed at addressing water security, diversifying services, and expanding the Canal’s role as a global logistics hub. Priority initiatives include the development of the Río Indio reservoir, new port terminals on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, and an energy corridor designed to enhance the Canal’s revenue streams.
“The Canal is more than a waterway; it is a strategic asset for Panama and the world,” said José Ramón Icaza, Minister for Canal Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Directors, during the inauguration ceremony. “Under Administrator Espino de Marotta’s leadership, we will strengthen its reliability and resilience while exploring new opportunities in logistics and energy.”
The ceremony, held at the Canal’s Administration Building, was attended by Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino, outgoing Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, and members of the Board of Directors. Espino de Marotta’s academic background, she holds a Bachelor’s in Marine Engineering from Texas A&M University and a Master’s in Economic Engineering from Universidad Santa María La Antigua, further bolsters her technical and managerial credentials for the role.
