Berg Propulsion Bets Big on India with Mumbai Office Launch

Berg Propulsion will strengthen its presence in India with the opening of a dedicated office in Mumbai on 1 January 2027. The move reflects the company’s growing involvement in the country’s expanding shipbuilding sector and aims to provide closer support to local partners.
The new facility will serve as a central hub for Berg’s operations in India, where the company has already supplied propulsion systems for two 33.55-metre electric tugs currently under construction at KMEW Group’s Mumbai shipyard. The office will focus on deepening collaborations with major Indian shipbuilders, including Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), and Chowgule Shipyard.

The Mumbai office will be led by Amrita Singh, who will take on the role of General Manager. Singh, previously Berg Propulsion’s Account Manager for New Sales, will oversee efforts to identify projects where the company’s solutions can improve efficiency and reduce emissions. She will be joined by Prasenjit Roy, a former Commander in the Indian Navy and former Programme Manager for Commercial Shipbuilding at GRSE, whose experience in equipment commissioning will support quality assurance services.
Roy highlighted the strategic importance of India’s propulsion sector, noting that both the Indian Navy and Coast Guard are undergoing significant expansion. “Almost every platform in these programmes relies on controllable-pitch propeller systems, which are a core part of Berg’s offerings,” he said. He also emphasised the shift toward sustainability, with shipyards increasingly interested in hybrid propulsion, variable speed drives, and CPP systems.
Singh added that the company plans to expand its business in India across key segments, including tugs, dredgers, and offshore support vessels (OSVs). To support this growth, Berg will establish a network of trained service agents in Mumbai, Kochi, and Visakhapatnam, where many of its customers operate. The company also intends to recruit and train local talent to build long-term expertise in the region.
Regional expansion and long-term goals
Beyond India, the Mumbai office may eventually extend its support to customers in neighbouring countries, such as Sri Lanka. Singh stressed the importance of proximity in a market where efficiency and sustainability are becoming baseline requirements rather than competitive advantages.
“The next five years will see optimised efficiency transition from a market differentiator to a minimum expectation,” Roy said. “Our goal is to ensure Berg’s systems and services align with these evolving demands.”
With strong private sector investment and government backing for sustainable projects, Berg Propulsion is positioning itself to play a key role in India’s maritime future.
