Norway’s TMC Compressors has been selected to equip two cutting-edge very large ammonia carriers (VLACs) with marine compressed air systems. The vessels, each with a capacity of 90,000 cubic metres, are currently under construction at China’s Jiangnan Shipyard for Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping.

The contract, announced on 9 October 2026, covers the delivery of complete marine compressed air systems for both vessels. Each system will include control and service air compressors designed specifically for maritime use by TMC. The company’s proprietary technology is tailored to meet the demands of marine and offshore environments, ensuring operational reliability.

The VLACs will feature a next-generation low-resistance hull design combined with an LPG dual-fuel propulsion system. According to industry reports, this configuration is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 20% and sulphur oxide emissions by approximately 99% compared to conventional fuel-powered ships.

Hans-Petter Tanum, TMC’s Director of Sales and Business Development, highlighted the company’s alignment with the project’s sustainability goals. “As demand for ammonia as both a fuel and energy carrier grows, the VLAC segment is becoming a strategically important market for the maritime industry,” he stated. “We are pleased to contribute our technology to enhance the operational reliability of these vessels.”

Tanum also emphasised TMC’s long-standing focus on energy efficiency. “Our technology development has always prioritised energy efficiency, making us a strong match for these advanced carriers,” he added. The financial details of the contract remain undisclosed.
