India’s first 92 kWh LTO battery wins maritime approval: why it matters
Indian Register of Shipping grants Type Approval to Medha Energy’s 92 kWh lithium-titanate battery.
The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) has granted Type Approval to a 92 kWh lithium-ion battery system developed by Medha Energy Solutions, marking a key advancement in the country’s energy storage sector. This certification confirms the system’s compliance with technical and safety standards, positioning it for use in maritime and transportation applications.
The battery system employs lithium titanate oxide (LTO) technology, distinguishing it from conventional lithium-ion alternatives. According to IRS, it is the first 92 kWh LTO battery to receive such approval in India, reflecting its potential to meet the demands of high-performance energy storage.

LTO batteries are recognized for their extended lifespan, rapid charging capabilities, and enhanced safety margins. These features make them particularly suitable for applications requiring frequent charging cycles and reliable power output, such as electric vehicles and maritime vessels.
K Shammy, Divisional Head of Ships and Technical Services at IRS, emphasized the significance of the milestone. In a statement, he noted that the approval supports India’s adoption of advanced energy storage technologies while ensuring safety and reliability. “Robust standards and certification will play a crucial role as electrification and alternative energy solutions expand,” he said.
Advantages and implications of the approval
The certification aligns with India’s Make in India initiative, which promotes domestic innovation in energy technologies. By approving a locally developed solution, IRS reinforces its commitment to fostering indigenous advancements while maintaining rigorous safety and performance standards.
The Type Approval certificate was presented to Medha Energy Solutions on 9 October 2026. The company was represented by Vishwas Rajendra Moktali, General Manager of Marketing, and Sahil Rajesh Prasade, Assistant Manager of Marketing.
