Trucking’s Diesel Dilemma: Why eTrailers Beat Electric Semis

Rising diesel costs are forcing trucking fleets to reconsider their fuel strategies, but a new analysis suggests they may not need to choose between sticking with diesel or switching to electric tractors. Range Energy’s latest whitepaper presents a third option: electrifying the trailer itself with its eTrailer system, which could deliver comparable fuel savings to electric semis while avoiding the infrastructure challenges of full electrification.

Refrigerated fleets face particularly steep fuel expenses, as they must power both the truck’s engine and a separate diesel-powered transport refrigeration unit (TRU). According to Range Energy’s findings, this dual-engine setup leaves operators vulnerable to volatile fuel prices, with no relief from electric tractors, which only address emissions from the tractor, not the TRU.

The eTrailer, however, targets both sources of diesel consumption. The system reduces tractor fuel use by 36.5% on assisted miles, equivalent to a 57% improvement in fuel economy, while also powering the reefer electrically. In simulations of 1,000 possible scenarios, the eTrailer matched or outperformed the Tesla Semi’s return on investment in 61% of cases, without requiring fleets to invest in charging infrastructure or wait for serial production, which begins in late 2027.

The Cost of Diesel Dependency

Transitioning to electric tractors like the Tesla Semi demands significant upfront investment, including multi-year efforts to build charging depots. Fleets that place orders today may still face delays due to infrastructure constraints. The eTrailer, by contrast, integrates with existing tractors and operations, eliminating the need for driver retraining or depot overhauls. This drop-in solution allows fleets to cut diesel use immediately, rather than waiting for charging networks to scale.

For operators seeking a faster, less capital-intensive path to fuel savings, the eTrailer offers a practical alternative, one that works within today’s fleet structures while delivering measurable efficiency gains.
