Blue Autonomy launches online academy to decode vessel performance data

The Athens-based firm rolls out 39 courses to help shipping professionals verify and defend vessel performance figures.

Blue Autonomy Academy offers 39 courses on vessel performance and maritime data compliance.

Athens-based maritime technology firm Blue Autonomy has introduced an online training platform designed to equip shipping professionals with the skills to analyze and validate vessel performance data. The newly launched Blue Autonomy Academy offers 39 self-paced courses targeting industry roles that increasingly require expertise in maritime data interpretation and regulatory compliance.

The academy’s courses are organized into nine specializations, addressing professionals such as technical superintendents, performance analysts, fleet managers, naval architects, and chartering teams. The curriculum emphasizes the technical foundations behind performance metrics rather than software-specific training.

Key topics include ship resistance and propulsion, hull and propeller performance under ISO 19030, speed trials following ISO 15016, and compliance with decarbonization frameworks like CII, EU ETS, and FuelEU Maritime. Additional modules cover bunker quality assessment, speed and consumption claims, emissions regulations, alternative fuels, and energy-saving technologies.

Curriculum designed for technical and operational roles: Blue Autonomy

Christos Papandreou, founder and CEO of Blue Autonomy, highlighted the practical focus of the program.

«Every reported vessel performance number is the result of calculations. Our academy trains professionals to dissect these figures, verify each input, and confidently endorse the outcomes.»

Certification and accessibility

Papandreou, a naval architect with 15 years of experience in fleet performance and operational data, has previously worked with companies including NEMO, DeepSea Technologies, StormGeo, Athenian Sea Carriers, and PwC. His background informs the academy’s approach, which integrates physics-based models and AI applications in areas such as speed-power analysis and fuel efficiency.

The academy operates on a pay-per-course model, with no subscription requirements. Participants can preview the first lesson of paid courses before purchasing. Each course concludes with a graded exam, requiring an 80% pass mark for certification. Exams draw from a larger question pool, and learners are allowed three attempts. Certificates are verifiable through an online public register but are not recognized as formal qualifications.

Specializations, which bundle multiple courses, culminate in a capstone project involving real vessel data and decision-making scenarios. Seven courses, including the maritime decarbonization and compliance specialization, are available free of charge. The platform also offers fleet and corporate packages for organizations training multiple employees.
