India’s Transworld Shipping Lines has re-entered the secondhand dry bulk market with the purchase of a supramax carrier for $16.5 million. The Navi Mumbai-based company announced the acquisition of the Saltwind Explorer, a 55,648 deadweight tonnage (dwt) vessel, in a filing with the National Stock Exchange of India.

The Saltwind Explorer, built in 2011 and registered under the Marshall Islands flag, is equipped with four cargo cranes. The vessel has been operating internationally since 2023. This purchase follows a series of asset sales by Transworld as part of its fleet restructuring strategy.

Fleet expansion and recent transactions: Transworld

In September, the company sold the 35,152 dwt TBC Kailash, also built in 2011, to Mandarine Ocean for $9.25 million. Earlier, in August, Transworld offloaded the 4,250 TEU containership SSL Brahmaputra to Avana Logistek, a subsidiary of DP World, for $11.4 million.

These transactions reflect Transworld’s ongoing efforts to reshape its fleet, a process that began in 2021 when DP World’s Unifeeder acquired its Indian coastal and feeder operations. The deal allowed Transworld to retain its shipowning and dry bulk businesses while divesting other segments.

The acquisition of the Saltwind Explorer comes as the dry bulk market experiences fluctuations in vessel values and charter rates, driven by shifts in global commodity demand. The vessel’s specifications, including its four cranes, make it suitable for transporting grains, minerals, and other bulk cargoes, particularly in regions with limited port infrastructure.

Market context and strategic outlook

Transworld’s latest move underscores the importance of fleet modernization in an industry facing stricter emissions regulations. By acquiring relatively newer vessels and selling older tonnage, the company aims to improve operational efficiency while complying with evolving environmental standards. However, the financial viability of such transactions remains a consideration amid rising interest rates and market uncertainties.

The Saltwind Explorer purchase signals Transworld’s intent to strengthen its position in the dry bulk segment. Industry observers will be watching the company’s next steps, as its ability to balance acquisitions and disposals could offer insights into its long-term strategy in a competitive maritime landscape.
