Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced it destroyed a US MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Strait of Hormuz using a new air defence system.
The drone, a medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft, fell into the Persian Gulf after being hit, according to Iranian sources.
The US has not confirmed the incident, but the Strait of Hormuz remains a flashpoint for global energy shipments.
Only five commodity vessels crossed the strait over the weekend, with some disabling their AIS transponders to avoid detection.
