Small shipowners stage comeback as tech cuts the middleman

Digital tools once exclusive to large managers are now available directly to owners at reasonable cost.

A small shipowner reviews vessel data on a digital platform, bypassing traditional management firms.

Sunil Kapoor, a shipping industry veteran, highlights how the balance of power is shifting. “When we acquired our vessel, nearly every shipmanagement company that approached us began the conversation the same way: ‘Let me show you our platform.’ Dashboards, procurement systems, performance monitoring, it all looked impressive,” he notes. “But most of this technology is no longer exclusive to the shipmanager. The same tools, and often the same specialists, are available directly to owners.”

In Greece, northern Europe and Japan, these owners maintained close relationships with their vessels, masters and chief engineers.

One incident from the 1980s illustrates this agility. A vessel waiting off South Africa received instructions to proceed to Saldanha Bay for loading. However, the rose boxes inside the ballastable cargo hold were choked, preventing the discharge of ballast water.

Portable pumps were arranged, but as the water level fell, the vessel began rolling dangerously due to free-surface effects. The crew halted the pumps, and the loading window was closing fast. The owner’s solution? Hire a helicopter, fly a diver directly to the vessel, and clear the choked rose boxes. The vessel loaded on time, avoiding costly delays.

“The owner didn’t know how to clear the rose boxes himself,” Kapoor explains. “He didn’t need to. He understood the consequence, found the right specialist and authorised the solution. That kind of direct and decisive ownership was once common in shipping.”

From hands-on owners to third-party dependence: Small

Safety-management systems, compliance departments, purchasing networks and global technical support became essential, and beyond the reach of many small owners. The rise of professional shipmanagement companies provided a solution, offering access to expertise that independent owners could no longer maintain alone.

Today, the conditions that once forced small owners to depend on large organisations are changing. Vessel data, voyage optimisation tools, procurement platforms, compliance advice and remote technical monitoring are now available directly to owners. Equipment manufacturers can assess machinery performance from thousands of miles away, while independent specialists can be brought in for specific problems without becoming permanent overheads.

Kapoor poses a critical question: “Does a small owner still need a large organisation around him, or simply the freedom to build the support he needs?” The answer appears to be the latter.

A case in point involves a chartering company owner who fixed a vessel to load cargo in a country facing heightened sanctions scrutiny. Despite full due diligence and legal compliance, the management company refused to proceed, citing reputational concerns.

The owner, however, examined the facts and reached a different conclusion. He took the vessel’s management in-house, and the vessel sailed and loaded the cargo without breaching any regulations. “No regulations were bypassed,” Kapoor emphasises. “What made the difference was the willingness to examine the facts, rely on specialist advice and make the decision.”
