The global shipbuilding industry is experiencing its most rapid expansion in over a decade, with new orders growing at a 27% year-on-year rate. This marks the fastest increase since the 2008 financial crisis, according to data from Clarksons Research. While the active merchant fleet expanded by just 4% to 117,022 vessels—totaling 1.8 billion gross tonnes (gt)—by early August, the backlog of new ships on order grew at nearly seven times that speed.
