Supply chain networks now face a critical gap: while real-time visibility tools flood operations centers with alerts, most lack the ability to respond effectively. When disruptions occur—whether from capacity shortages, regulatory changes, or rising customer demands—teams often resort to manual interventions, negotiating spot rates and coordinating emergency shipments under pressure.

The industry has reached a turning point. Real-time visibility, once a competitive advantage, is now considered a basic requirement. However, the ability to act on that visibility remains rare. The issue isn’t a shortage of data. Modern dashboards track shipments, delays, and bottlenecks in real time, yet most systems stop at identification. When a disruption occurs, teams must still scramble to secure alternative capacity, adjust routes, or renegotiate contracts—often at higher costs. The question, as FreightWaves frames it, is whether supply chains can move beyond observation to execution.

A key solution lies in multi-shipper networks, which allow companies to pool resources, access shared capacity, and benchmark performance against peers. Yet few operators have integrated these networks into their real-time decision-making processes.

Building a responsive supply chain

FreightWaves’ analysis outlines three strategies to bridge the gap between visibility and action. First, companies should shift from rigid, long-term contracts to flexible carrier relationships that can adapt to disruptions. Second, they must synchronize coordination across teams, transportation modes, and regions before a crisis occurs—not during. Third, they should leverage multi-shipper networks to access additional capacity, secure better rates, and improve benchmarking.

The report also advises logistics managers to evaluate their providers with three critical questions: Are promised savings being delivered, or just projected? Is the network designed to respond automatically, or does it require manual intervention? And most importantly, does the system convert real-time data into immediate action, or does it leave teams to manage the fallout?

As supply chains grow more complex, the difference between success and failure will hinge on this distinction. The most resilient networks won’t be those with the most data, but those with the intelligence to act on it.
