The Panama Canal celebrated the christening of five new hybrid tugboats that have joined its operational fleet, strengthening the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the operations of the interoceanic waterway. The vessels Isla Farallón, Isla Cébaco, Isla Cañas, Isla Coiba and Isla Boná represent a significant step forward in the modernization of the fleet and reflect the organization’s commitment to innovation in order to meet the demands of global maritime trade.

Equipped with a hybrid propulsion system that combines diesel engines, electric motors and an energy storage system using batteries, the new tugboats optimize energy consumption, reduce emissions and improve the reliability of maneuvers. This technology also contributes to lower fuel consumption, reduced maintenance costs and extended equipment lifespan, supporting a more efficient and environmentally responsible operation.

The Panama Canal Administrator, Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, highlighted that the incorporation of these new vessels reflects the organization’s long-term vision to maintain an operation prepared to face the challenges of global maritime trade.

“The incorporation of these hybrid tugboats reflects our commitment to a cleaner, more efficient and sustainable operation, while strengthening the competitiveness of the Panama Canal for future generations,” he stated.

For her part, the Deputy Administrator of the Panama Canal, Ilya Espino de Marotta, emphasized that the people behind the operation of these vessels equipped with cutting-edge technology are the true driving force behind their success.

“Behind every tugboat there are captains, mariners, pilots, operators, mechanics, engineers and support teams who, with a Canal spirit, make the operation an example of excellence,” she said.

A modern fleet inspired by Panama’s maritime heritage

The names of the tugboats pay tribute to Panama’s natural and maritime wealth, highlighting the connection between the Canal and the country while emphasizing the role of these vessels as part of a modern, safe operation prepared for future challenges.

With the addition of these five new hybrid tugboats, the Panama Canal continues to strengthen its operational capabilities and advance the implementation of technologies that promote an increasingly efficient and sustainable operation, benefiting its customers, international maritime trade and Panama as a whole.
