Norway Bets $7.3m on Wind Sails to Slash Shipping Emissions
WINTEGRATE project aims to integrate wind propulsion with vessel systems for up to 30% fuel savings.
Norway has launched WINTEGRATE, a NOK 68 million (USD 7.3 million) research initiative to accelerate the adoption of wind-assisted propulsion in commercial shipping. Led by Kongsberg Maritime, the project brings together 13 Norwegian companies and research institutions to develop integrated solutions for wind-powered vessels.
Wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS), such as rotor sails and suction wings, use wind energy to generate forward thrust, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. While these technologies show promise for cutting emissions, their full potential has been limited by challenges in integrating them with existing ship systems.
Integration as the Key to Scalability: wind-assisted propulsion
WINTEGRATE aims to overcome this barrier by developing technologies that synchronize WAPS with propulsion, power management, and weather routing systems. The project will combine digital tools, operational optimization, and full-scale testing to create solutions for both existing ships and newbuilds.

The consortium includes technology providers like Norsepower and bound4blue, research institutions such as SINTEF Ocean and OsloMet, and classification society DNV. StormGeo will contribute weather routing expertise to optimize wind-assisted voyages.
Real-World Testing and Industry Impact
The project will use demonstration vessels from shipping companies Odfjell SE and Seatrans to collect operational data. This real-world testing will validate the technologies and support their commercial deployment.
WINTEGRATE is funded through Norway’s Green Platform programme, which has allocated over NOK 1 billion to sustainable maritime projects since 2021. The initiative reflects Norway’s push to lead in green shipping technologies and decarbonize the maritime sector.
If successful, the project could accelerate the global adoption of wind-assisted propulsion, offering a scalable solution for reducing emissions in commercial shipping. Industry observers will monitor its progress over the next three years to assess whether wind sails can transition from niche applications to mainstream use.
