$36m Nuclear Reactor Win Sparks Maritime Energy Revolution
Deployable Energy’s 1 MW Unity reactor clinches 2026 SHIPPINGInsight Innovation Award with $36m investor backing.
A Houston-based nuclear technology firm has secured the 2026 SHIPPINGInsight Innovation Award for its modular microreactor, a breakthrough that could transform energy supply for maritime and remote operations. Deployable Energy received the honor at this year’s SHIPPINGInsight Fleet Optimization & Innovation Conference, where its Unity Nuclear Battery earned $36 million in simulated investments from industry judges.
The award was presented on October 13 during the 15th annual conference in Houston. Deployable Energy’s Vice President, John Baber, accepted the prize after the company’s technology outperformed three competing innovations, Sidonia, Customs Genius, and Philyron, in a live pitch session. The judging panel included executives from ABS, Mare Liberum, and other maritime leaders.
Why the maritime sector is betting on microreactors: Energy
The Unity Nuclear Battery is a 1-megawatt modular system designed for rapid deployment across maritime, defense, and off-grid applications. Its compact, mass-produced design addresses key challenges in energy reliability and scalability, particularly in remote or critical infrastructure settings.
Deployable Energy’s progress has been accelerated through collaborations with the U.S. Department of Energy and Idaho National Laboratory (INL). In June 2026, the Unity reactor achieved criticality in just 150 days, a record pace for U.S. nuclear development, under the Nuclear Energy Launch Pad initiative. This milestone met a federal deadline set by Executive Order 14301, demonstrating the project’s efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Carleen Lyden Walker, Chief Evolution Officer of SHIPPINGInsight, highlighted the maritime industry’s growing interest in nuclear solutions. “This year’s conference was dominated by discussions about nuclear applications,” she said. “Deployable Energy’s win reflects the sector’s readiness to embrace innovative energy technologies.”
Next steps: Full-power testing in 2027
Deployable Energy is now preparing for a full-power demonstration of the Unity reactor at INL’s Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments (DOME) facility in 2027. The DOME testbed, capable of evaluating reactors up to 20 megawatts, will validate the system’s performance under operational conditions. Selection for the program follows a competitive review and signals confidence from the Department of Energy in the technology’s commercial potential.
The company’s CEO, Bobby Gallagher, emphasized the significance of the upcoming test. “Being chosen for DOME confirms that our approach works,” he said. “We met the July 4th criticality goal by moving quickly without cutting corners, and we’re excited to continue this momentum.”
For the maritime industry, the implications are substantial. A 1-megawatt reactor could power offshore platforms or serve as a backup energy source for ports during outages. The modular design also enables mass production, potentially reducing costs and expanding access to clean energy in hard-to-reach locations.
Deployable Energy described the award as a key step toward commercialization. “This recognition validates our progress from demonstration to deployment,” the company stated. “We’re grateful to our partners at INL, the Department of Energy, and the National Reactor Innovation Center for creating pathways to bring advanced nuclear technology to market.”
