Döhle doubles down: two more 14,000 TEU giants ordered from China

German owner Peter Döhle Schiffahrts has returned to Hudong-Zhonghua for a fresh pair of 14,000 TEU methanol-ready.

The first 14,000 TEU vessel from Döhle’s 2024 series was delivered five months early in May.

Hamburg-based shipping company Peter Döhle Schiffahrts has expanded its fleet renewal program with a new order for two 14,000 TEU containerships at China’s Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard. This latest contract brings the company’s total orders at the CSSC-owned yard to six vessels, reinforcing a partnership that began earlier this year.

The German tonnage provider initially placed an order for four 14,000 TEU ships in 2024, marking its first containership newbuilding program in nearly nine years. The first vessel from that series, measuring 335 meters in length, was delivered in May—five months ahead of schedule. The ship features a methanol-ready main engine, a shaft generator, and design provisions for alternative fuels.

Expanding fleet across multiple segments: Döhle

The two new 14,000 TEU ships are part of a broader fleet expansion strategy. Earlier this year, Döhle booked two 3,100 TEU feeder vessels at Chengxi Shipyard for approximately $48 million each, with delivery expected in 2029. This followed an order for four 2,900 TEU feedermaxes at Huangpu Wenchong, scheduled for delivery in late 2027 and 2028.

Industry sources also suggest the company is in discussions for up to five 8,400 TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships at Guangzhou Shipyard International, with each vessel estimated to cost around $121 million. The new 14,000 TEU ships are set for delivery in August and October 2028.
