EU mobilises €422 million to support the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure in road, maritime and air transport
06·02·2025 – The Commission selected 39 innovative projects across the EU, dedicated to deploying alternative fuels infrastructure. A total investment of €422 million, provided through the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), will support these initiatives in driving the transition to cleaner transport. The selected projects will focus on installing public electric recharging stations, including high-power megawatt chargers for both heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles, developing hydrogen refueling stations and onshore power installations in ports as well as electrifying airports and providing infrastructure for alternative fuels such as ammonia and methanol for shipping.
This significant investment aligns with the EU’s efforts to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and strengthen the competitiveness of European industries.
AFIF operates through a continuous rolling call for proposals, allowing for the regular funding of new and innovative projects throughout the year. The current call, launched on 29 February 2024, has just completed its first evaluation round. The next cut-off will be on 11 June 2025, where the remaining budget of approximately €578 million in funding will be available for successful proposals.
Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, said: “The 39 projects we are supporting today, will accelerate the deployment of critical recharging and refueling infrastructure needed for our expanding zero-emission fleets. Together, they will add nearly 5,000 new charging points, including 626 mega-watt chargers, helping citizens choose zero-emission vehicles and contribute to a cleaner environment.”
AFIF is a key driver of the EU’s efforts to expand alternative fuel supply infrastructureacross its trans-European transport network. Its priorities are also aligned with the ReFuelEU Aviation and FuelEU Maritime Regulations, which aim to decarbonise the aviation and maritime sectors.
