Oceania Sonata, the first of Fincantieri’s new Sonata Class cruise ships, launched at the Marghera shipyard.

The Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has launched Oceania Sonata, the first vessel in a new generation of luxury cruise ships. The 86,000-ton vessel, currently under construction at the company’s Marghera shipyard, is set to enter service in 2027 as part of Oceania Cruises’ fleet.

The new ship will accommodate 1,390 guests and feature expansive public spaces, high-end comfort standards, and a design aimed at delivering an exclusive travel experience. Oceania Sonata marks the debut of the Sonata Class, which builds on the success of the Allura Class—two of its predecessors, Oceania Vista and Oceania Allura, were delivered by Fincantieri in 2023 and 2025, respectively.

The Sonata Class program includes four additional sister ships beyond Oceania Sonata. The next vessel, Oceania Arietta, is scheduled for delivery in 2029, with three more planned for 2032, 2035, and 2037. This expansion reinforces the long-standing partnership between Fincantieri and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd., Oceania Cruises’ parent company.

The Marghera shipyard, where Oceania Sonata is being built, plays a pivotal role in Fincantieri’s operations. As one of the industry’s leading production centers, it has constructed 36 cruise ships since 1991 and employs around 6,000 workers daily, including Fincantieri staff and contractors. The facility has strengthened its position in the global cruise shipbuilding sector through investments in automation, digitalization, and innovation.
