Canada’s Submarine Plan: 12 New Boats to Secure Underwater Future

Canada’s $60bn submarine programme will replace ageing Victoria-class fleet with up to 12 modern vessels by 2035

Canada has announced plans to replace its aging Victoria-class submarine fleet with up to 12 modern vessels, marking a major step in strengthening its long-term underwater defense capabilities. The Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP) aims to establish a sustainable industrial base capable of supporting these platforms throughout their operational lifecycle.

As part of this initiative, engineering consultancy BMT has launched a specialized training program to address Canada’s growing need for submarine expertise. The in-person course, led by BMT’s submarine specialists, provides participants with foundational knowledge of submarine systems, operations, and maintenance requirements.

Building expertise for future submarine operations: Canada Submarine

The program targets technical professionals, industry partners, and government organizations, focusing on the unique challenges of underwater operations. Unlike surface vessels, submarines require distinct engineering approaches, operational protocols, and safety measures due to their submerged environment.

Supporting modern submarines demands expertise across multiple disciplines, including naval architecture, marine and mechanical engineering, electrical systems, software development, cybersecurity, logistics, and technical maintenance. The course aims to help participants understand how their existing skills can contribute to Canada’s future submarine capabilities.

The initiative comes at a critical time, as much of Canada’s current submarine expertise is concentrated on maintaining the Victoria-class fleet. With the new submarine program expected to unfold over the coming decade, developing additional knowledge and industrial capacity has become a priority.

Strengthening Canada’s submarine ecosystem

The program is designed to foster collaboration among government agencies, industry partners, and technical specialists. By improving understanding of submarine operations and sustainment requirements, the initiative seeks to create a more resilient submarine ecosystem capable of supporting Canada’s long-term defense needs.

Canada’s submarine modernization effort represents a significant investment in both national security and industrial development. The success of the program will depend not only on acquiring new vessels but also on cultivating the skilled workforce needed to operate and maintain them for decades to come.
