Vietnam’s Hai An bets $70m on feeder fleet expansion with Chinese newbuilds
The Ho Chi Minh-listed owner orders two 1,928 TEU vessels at Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard for $66.96m.
Vietnamese shipping company Hai An Transport and Stevedoring has approved a $70 million investment to expand its feeder fleet with two new containerships. The vessels, each with a capacity of 1,928 TEU, will be built at Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard in China.
The agreement, formalized in a letter of intent signed in August, sets the total cost of the shipbuilding package at $66.96 million, equivalent to $33.48 million per vessel. The remaining $3.04 million from the approved budget will cover initial equipment, project personnel, and related expenses. China Shipbuilding Trading is also involved in the project alongside the shipyard.
The first ship is expected to be completed by the end of October 2029, with the second following in November of the same year.

Contract terms and delivery schedule: Hai An
This latest order is part of Hai An’s broader fleet expansion efforts. In November 2023, the company secured a deal with Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co for up to four 7,100 TEU vessels, the largest in its history, through its joint venture, Hai An Green Shipping Lines, with Viconship. Earlier this year, Hai An also placed an order for two 3,000 TEU ships, with options for two additional vessels, at Yangzijiang Shipbuilding’s Jiangsu New Yangzi facility.
The Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange-listed company has traditionally operated in the feeder segment, where it built its reputation. The new 1,928 TEU vessels will reinforce its presence in this sector while supporting its gradual move into larger ship classes.
