AR in Maritime: ABS Sets Safety Rules Before Industry Adopts Tech
The shipping industry is exploring augmented reality (AR) as a tool to improve efficiency in industrial operations, but its adoption hinges on proving it can enhance productivity without compromising safety. To address this challenge, classification society ABS has released new guidance to help maritime and offshore operators assess AR’s potential and risks.
The ABS advisory, developed in collaboration with the ABS Laboratory for Ocean Innovation at Texas A&M University, provides a structured framework for evaluating AR applications in tasks such as inspection, maintenance, navigation, and training. The guidance emphasizes the need to compare AR-assisted workflows with traditional practices across safety and performance metrics.
Evaluating AR’s Impact on Industrial Tasks
AR technology overlays digital information, such as step-by-step procedures, hazard warnings, or equipment specifications, directly into a worker’s field of view. While this can streamline complex tasks, ABS warns that improper implementation may introduce risks like visual occlusion, distraction, or overreliance on system-generated data. The advisory highlights that different tasks, from hand-eye coordination to memory-dependent work, may require tailored AR solutions to maximize benefits.
“Augmented reality could transform industrial work by integrating expert guidance and real-time data into a user’s line of sight,” said Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. “However, unlocking this potential responsibly demands a clear understanding of its safety and performance implications. This advisory equips the industry with the tools to evaluate those factors rigorously.”
As AR transitions from pilot projects to broader deployment, industry forums are amplifying discussions on its practical applications. Nor-Shipping, a leading maritime event, has introduced a new Focus Stage for 2027, offering day-long sessions on emerging technologies, including maritime AI and port operations. Located in Hall G, the platform will provide open, expert-led discussions accessible to all attendees with a visitor or exhibitor pass.
Industry Events Drive AR Adoption Dialogue
“Nor-Shipping evolves alongside the industry we serve,” said Sidsel Norvik, Nor-Shipping Director. “Our audience seeks not only business opportunities but also insights into the latest developments. The Focus Stage allows us to deliver deeper value by dedicating entire days to critical topics, fostering informed decision-making.”
The guidance from ABS and the industry dialogue at Nor-Shipping reflect a growing emphasis on balancing innovation with safety as AR moves toward wider adoption in maritime and offshore operations.
