UAE Shuts All Beaches After Tanker Spill Covers 100km² Near Coast

Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah beaches remain closed.

All Beaches
Cleanup teams work along Umm Al Quwain’s coastline after a tanker oil spill forced beach closures.

The United Arab Emirates has temporarily closed all beaches and coastal areas in Umm Al Quwain following the detection of an oil spill from an unidentified tanker. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment confirmed the incident on Friday, though neither the vessel responsible nor the cause of the spill has been disclosed.

The UAE authorities acted quickly after the ministry’s monitoring system detected the pollution. All beaches in Umm Al Quwain were immediately cordoned off, while residents in nearby Sharjah and Ajman reported unusual odours. The ministry clarified that these odours posed no threat to public health.

Specialist teams have been deployed to assess the affected coastline and monitor the contaminated waters. Cleanup operations are underway to limit environmental damage, with authorities warning that beaches will remain closed until safety assessments are complete. Fishermen and other sea users have been advised to avoid the area and follow official instructions.

Immediate response and environmental concerns: All Beaches

Environmental experts have raised concerns about the long-term impact of the spill. The United Nations University previously warned that oil can travel significant distances from spill sites, becoming trapped in mangrove roots and coastal sediments even after visible slicks disappear.

This incident is the latest in a series of oil spills affecting the region. In June, the tanker Caroline Bezengi ran aground near Oman’s Hallaniyat Islands, leaking Russian crude oil along approximately 40 kilometres of coastline. By mid-August, satellite images confirmed the extent of the pollution.

Regional context of maritime pollution

Another significant spill occurred in August when the bulk carrier Minoan Pioneer was damaged near the Strait of Hormuz. Satellite imagery later revealed an oil slick covering about 100 square kilometres near Iran’s Qeshm Island and neighbouring Hengam Island.

Precautionary measures have extended beyond Umm Al Quwain, with Ras Al Khaimah closing all its beaches and Sharjah shutting both its city beaches and Al Hamriyah Beach. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and will determine when it is safe to reopen coastal areas.

“There is no threat to public health from the odours.”
