Thenamaris bets big on boxes: four 3,200 TEU ships ordered for 2028
Greek owner Thenamaris has placed an order for four 3,200 TEU containerships at China’s Hengli Shipbuilding.
Greek shipping company Thenamaris has re-entered the containership newbuilding market with an order for four vessels at China’s Hengli Shipbuilding. The 3,200 TEU ships will be managed through Thenamaris ConBulk, the group’s division handling both dry bulk and container operations.
The newbuilds, scheduled for delivery in 2028, will have a deadweight of 41,200 tonnes and dimensions of 199.9 metres in length and 35.2 metres in width. Each vessel will be equipped with Everllence main engines, open-loop scrubbers, shaft generators, and shore-power capability, though the contract value remains undisclosed.
This order marks a significant expansion for Thenamaris in the container sector. Currently, its ConBulk arm operates 24 bulk carriers and only two containerships, making the new quartet a notable increase in its container fleet exposure.
Strengthening ties with Hengli Shipbuilding: Thenamaris
The latest order deepens Thenamaris’ relationship with Hengli Shipbuilding. In May, the Greek company placed an order for three 113,300 dwt LR2/aframax tankers at the same yard, with deliveries set for late 2028 and early 2029.
With these additions, Thenamaris now has 19 vessels under construction, including 12 tankers, three 90,000 cubic metre very large ammonia carriers (VLACs), and the four new containerships. The move reflects a strategic diversification beyond its traditional focus on bulk and tanker markets.
