ShipStation breaks ground with first LTL-parcel integration for SMEs
E-commerce platform now offers 75 less-than-truckload carriers alongside parcel services in single interface
ShipStation has become the first shipping software platform to integrate less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers directly into its parcel shipping interface, offering e-commerce sellers a unified solution for managing both small parcels and palletised freight.
Customers can now access real-time LTL rates, create and manage orders, track shipments, and handle invoicing, all within a single platform. Travis Rimel, Chief Product Officer at ShipStation, described the development as more than just a new feature: “This isn’t just a new feature; it’s a foundation. Bringing freight and parcel data together lets us build smarter tools on top of it, so merchants can make better logistics decisions across their operations.".
Why LTL integration matters for e-commerce sellers: ShipStation
The logistics landscape for small and mid-sized businesses has long been fragmented. While parcel shipping platforms like ShipStation, Shippo, and EasyShip have streamlined the process of sending small packages, palletised freight has remained a separate challenge. Chris Wofford, founder of Wofford Advisors LLC, a strategic advisory firm for the logistics sector, explained the gap: “Most of those small companies don’t have enough volumes to do full truckload so their first need after parcel shipping tends to be LTL, which creates this natural linkage between LTL freight brokerage and parcel.”
Until now, merchants have had to rely on freight brokers or manual processes to manage LTL shipments, often without integration into their existing shipping software. According to ShipStation’s own survey, 78% of merchants already ship freight, yet more than half manage it separately from their parcel operations.
The new integration aims to address these pain points by providing a seamless workflow. Sellers can now compare LTL rates alongside parcel options, select the best carrier for their needs, and generate shipping labels, all without leaving the ShipStation platform.
How the merger with WWEX Group enabled the breakthrough
The integration of LTL carriers into ShipStation’s platform is a direct result of the merger between ShipStation and WWEX Group, finalised earlier this year under the ownership of private equity firm Thoma Bravo. The combined entity, now operating as ShipStation Global, boasts a $12 billion valuation and brings together a suite of logistics services under one roof. WWEX Group, a UPS parcel reseller, already had established relationships with 75 LTL carriers, which ShipStation has now leveraged to create its unified platform.
Once a customer reaches a certain size, UPS takes over the account directly, creating a seamless transition for growing businesses. For merchants, the benefits extend beyond convenience.
ShipStation’s platform is already used by a wide range of e-commerce sellers, from small businesses operating on platforms like Shopify, eBay, and TikTok to larger brands in Europe. The integration of LTL carriers is just the beginning, with more product enhancements expected in the coming months.
The logistics industry has long been characterised by siloed systems, with parcel shipping, freight brokerage, and warehouse management operating independently. ShipStation’s integration of LTL carriers into its parcel platform represents a significant step toward breaking down these barriers. For small and mid-sized merchants, the ability to manage all aspects of their shipping operations in one place could be a game-changer, reducing complexity and enabling growth.
As the e-commerce sector continues to expand, the demand for efficient, cost-effective shipping solutions will only grow. ShipStation’s move to integrate LTL carriers into its platform positions the company at the forefront of this evolution, offering merchants a competitive edge in an increasingly crowded marketplace. With more integrations on the horizon, the platform is poised to become an indispensable tool for businesses looking to streamline their logistics operations and scale with confidence.
