RINA names maritime veteran Moretti as new CEO amid expansion drive
Italian classification group taps internal candidate to steer growth after revenues more than double in five years.
RINA, the Italian classification and engineering group based in Genoa, has appointed Paolo Moretti as its new group chief executive. The company has selected a long-standing executive with deep maritime expertise to steer its next phase of growth.
Moretti, a naval engineer, has been with RINA since 1997, holding key roles including general manager of the marine business and executive vice president of marine strategic development. Before his latest appointment, he served as general manager and head of the group’s marine and certification divisions, where he oversaw core maritime operations from 2020 until this year.
Leadership changes reflect strategic growth and shareholder shifts: RINA
The appointment follows a period of significant expansion for RINA, which has more than doubled its revenues over the past five years. The group’s growth strategy has included targeted acquisitions to strengthen its technical and engineering capabilities, such as the purchase of Finnish naval architecture firm Foreship.
Moretti succeeds Carlo Luzzatto, who led RINA since December 2023. Luzzatto’s tenure began after Fondo Italiano d’Investimento acquired a minority stake in the group, investing up to €180 million. The transaction also saw Ugo Salerno transition from chief executive to executive chairman, a position he continues to hold. Registro Italiano Navale remains the controlling shareholder.
Alongside Moretti’s appointment, RINA has named Giosuè Vezzuto as the new chief executive of RINA Services, the group’s marine classification and certification division. Vezzuto replaces Moretti, who previously led the unit, ensuring continuity in the company’s traditional maritime operations.
Focus on international expansion and high-value sectors
Under Moretti’s leadership, RINA is expected to accelerate its international expansion, particularly in maritime services, certification, infrastructure, and engineering. Recent acquisitions, including Foreship, have positioned the group to compete in areas such as ship design, digitalisation, and sustainability consulting.
Moretti’s extensive experience within RINA, particularly his leadership of the marine classification business, equips him with a strong understanding of the regulatory and technical challenges facing the maritime industry. His appointment comes as the group seeks to leverage its expanded capabilities and financial backing to pursue new opportunities in global markets.
