Nordica: The Icebreaker That Just Rewrote Arctic Shipping Rules

The Finnish icebreaker Nordica has embarked on a year-long mission to support Canada’s Arctic operations, departing from its home port of Kotka on August 23. The vessel is scheduled to reach St. John’s, Newfoundland, by September 5 before heading north to assist with icebreaking, search-and-rescue efforts, and environmental protection in the region. The deployment stems from a charter agreement between Finland’s state-owned operator Arctia and Qikiqtaaluk Horizon Arctic Services (QHAS), a company owned by the Inuit.
