Nobu Su’s 20% fuel gamble: can a new bow rewrite shipping’s rules?

Former TMT boss Nobu Su seeks industry funding to test a radical hull design promising around 20% energy savings.

Nobu Su, the flamboyant Taiwanese tycoon who built Today Makes Tomorrow (TMT) into one of Asia’s largest shipping empires before its $7bn collapse, is back with a radical challenge to the industry: rethink the hull before rethinking the fuel.

Su is developing a new bow and forward-hull architecture that he believes could materially reduce resistance and propulsion requirements. The aspirational target, around 20% fuel and energy savings, is not presented as a guaranteed outcome but as a benchmark for testing. In an email to Splash, Su made clear the ask: “We are not asking anyone to believe our theory. We are asking the industry to test it.”

Su’s return to the maritime spotlight is marked by the same unconventional thinking that defined his earlier ventures. At its peak, TMT placed around $7bn in orders at Korean yards before the financial crisis and shipping downturn shredded the business, leading to bankruptcy protection in 2013. His ships were anything but ordinary. The giant A Whale, for instance, was famously pitched as an oil-skimming vessel in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon disaster.

After exiting shipowning, Su turned to invention, amassing more than 40 patents. His attempts to return to the industry, however, met resistance from brokers and creditors. Legal troubles followed, culminating in a 2019 jail sentence in London for contempt of court over a long-running dispute involving FFA contracts. Released in 2020, Su has since focused on disruptive ideas, this time, targeting the very shape of ships.

Testing the theory: a call for industry collaboration

Su’s proposal is not a plea for blind faith but a structured path to validation. The plan includes computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling, model testing, independent verification, classification approval, and ultimately a full-scale demonstration. The venture is framed as a technology-validation programme, with Su seeking financial contributions from shipowners and other industry participants. Unlike conventional investments, this initiative does not promise immediate returns but positions itself as a collective effort to explore a potential breakthrough in vessel efficiency.

“Much of shipping’s decarbonisation debate is focused on what powers a ship rather than how much energy the vessel needs in the first place,” Su argued. His approach flips the script: reduce the energy demand before switching the energy source.

This time, however, Su is not asking for trust, he is asking for collaboration. The question now is whether the industry is willing to take the gamble.

The road ahead is long. CFD modelling and model testing alone could take years, and even if the results are promising, scaling the design to full-sized vessels will require significant investment and regulatory approval. For now, Su’s proposal remains a bold hypothesis, one that could either reshape the future of shipping or join the ranks of maritime innovations that never quite delivered on their promise.
