Motus glitches drag on: FMCSA still silent on full fix date
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has yet to announce a definitive timeline for resolving the ongoing issues with its new Motus registration system. Deputy Administrator Jesse Elison addressed the problem again on Monday during FreightWaves’ Broker Compliance Symposium in Chattanooga, acknowledging persistent challenges but offering no concrete resolution date.
Motus, designed to modernize carrier registration and compliance, has faced significant criticism since its launch. Elison described the system’s early weeks as “really, really brutal”, with technical problems disrupting operations for legitimate businesses. While the platform was intended to block unqualified carriers, Elison admitted it has affected “more people than just the bad actors we intended it for.” The FMCSA’s goal of improving security has inadvertently created barriers for compliant operators.
Progress without a deadline: motus registration system
In early October, Elison had stated that fixes were “weeks away”, but during Monday’s event, he avoided setting a new timeline. Instead, he reiterated that stabilization would take “really weeks and not months”. The FMCSA has temporarily waived certain registration requirements to ease the burden on users, though Elison advised against using the system unless absolutely necessary: “If you don’t need to go in, don’t go in yet.”
For those requiring immediate registration, Elison recommended contacting insurance providers or the FMCSA directly for assistance. Despite the setbacks, he maintained confidence in Motus’ long-term potential, calling it “the system that really serves the industry.” However, he acknowledged the difficulty of balancing security and usability, noting the challenge of “fixing something without breaking it further.”
The freight industry remains in limbo as the FMCSA works to refine Motus. With no clear resolution in sight, carriers and brokers are advised to proceed cautiously and seek support from the agency when needed.
