An Omani Royal Air Force helicopter evacuates an injured crew member from the merchant vessel JOHN K off Oman’s coast.

An Omani Royal Air Force helicopter evacuated an injured crew member from the merchant vessel JOHN K on Monday evening after a fire broke out in its engine room, 44 nautical miles off the coast of South Al Batinah, Oman.

The incident, confirmed by Oman’s Maritime Security Centre, saw the seafarer airlifted for medical treatment. The centre shared details of the rescue on X but did not disclose the cause of the fire or the extent of the crew member’s injuries.

The JOHN K, a merchant ship operating near the Strait of Hormuz, became the focus of a rapid response after distress signals indicated an engine room fire.

While the injured seafarer was transported for medical care, the vessel’s condition and the fire’s origin remain under investigation. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, sees approximately 20 million barrels of oil pass through daily, accounting for roughly a quarter of the world’s seaborne oil trade.

The rescue of the JOHN K crew member was not the only maritime incident reported in the area. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed a separate attack on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, occurring on Sunday, October October 11. The vessel, which remains unnamed, was reportedly struck by an unknown projectile, though no injuries or damage were confirmed.

The agency is investigating the incident, though authorities have not linked it to the engine fire aboard the JOHN K.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a flashpoint for maritime security, with daily shipments of oil and gas bound for Asian markets, including China, India, and Japan. The International Energy Agency estimates that the strait handles about a quarter of the world’s seaborne oil trade, making any disruption a concern for global energy supplies.

No further details have been released regarding the injured crew member’s condition or the cause of the engine fire.
