Three major players in the shipping industry have joined forces to develop an innovative container vessel concept powered by artificial intelligence. CMA CGM, Bureau Veritas, and the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI) formalized their partnership at the SMM 2026 trade fair in Hamburg, Germany.
The initiative aims to explore how AI, automation, and decision-support systems can enhance container ship operations while maintaining human oversight. The project focuses on reducing crew workload, improving safety, cutting fuel consumption, and boosting overall vessel performance.
Maritime giants collaborate on AI-assisted container vessel: CMA CGM
The collaboration will unfold in several stages. Initially, the partners will conduct a study to identify which onboard systems could benefit most from AI assistance. This will be followed by selecting suitable technologies and developing a detailed vessel concept for trial implementation.
Bureau Veritas will provide regulatory oversight, risk assessments, and classification services. SDARI will contribute ship design expertise and smart-ship features, while CMA CGM will ensure the concept meets operational requirements and industry benchmarks. Christine Cabau Woehrel, Executive Vice President of CMA CGM, emphasized that crew members will be involved in the technology’s development from the beginning.
Phased development with human-centric approach
The project will define clear roles for both onboard crew and shore-based personnel working alongside the AI-assisted systems. The vessel concept will undergo rigorous testing against various scenarios under Bureau Veritas regulations. The first phase of the study is expected to conclude by mid-2027.
This collaboration represents a significant step toward smarter shipping solutions. By integrating AI while maintaining human oversight, the partners aim to address key industry challenges including fuel efficiency, crew workload, and operational safety.
