US Ports Reopen in Record Time After Hurricane Isaias Strikes
Gulfport, Mobile and Pascagoula are already operating normally.
The U.S. Coast Guard has accelerated efforts to reopen ports along Florida’s Gulf Coast after Hurricane Isaias struck the region, causing widespread disruptions. The storm hit near Destin as a Category 2 hurricane late Friday, resulting in at least three fatalities and leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity. State officials anticipate power will be restored for 95% of customers by Monday.
Port recovery operations have progressed rapidly, with Gulfport, Mobile, and Pascagoula already operating normally. Other nearby ports are expected to follow soon, according to Coast Guard updates. Capt. Mike Vega, commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector Mobile, emphasized the agency’s focus on safety and efficiency, stating that teams are working to restore maritime commerce as conditions permit.
Seventeen specialized teams have been deployed to evaluate damage and restore critical services. Seven teams are inspecting aids to navigation, while five others assess port infrastructure. An additional five teams are working to re-establish VHF radio communications, setting up temporary stations to maintain contact with vessels.
Assessment and Recovery Efforts: us coast guard
The most intensive assessments are concentrated in Destin, Panama City, and Pensacola, where port traffic remains restricted. Coast Guard aircrews, operating from a training airfield in Mobile, are conducting aerial surveys to identify hazards. Meanwhile, the National Guard has been deployed to clear debris and restore road access following a federal disaster declaration by the Trump administration.
The swift reopening of key ports is critical for regional supply chains. With power restoration underway and infrastructure assessments nearly complete, maritime traffic is gradually resuming. The Coast Guard’s coordinated response aims to minimize economic disruptions while ensuring safety remains the top priority.
