Sweden Bolsters Ukraine’s River Demining

Sweden has announced a new support package for Ukraine, combining maritime equipment and financial aid to strengthen Kyiv’s defenses amid ongoing Russian attacks. The initiative includes 10 boats and $28 million in funding, unveiled on August 28.
The Swedish Coast Guard will deliver 10 vessels—workboats and speedboats—to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service. These boats, transferred in their current condition, will be stripped of any Swedish government markings or specialized equipment. Their primary roles will include riverbed demining, towing operations, and emergency transport, addressing critical gaps in Ukraine’s maritime response capabilities.

The financial aid portion of the package, totaling $28 million, prioritizes Ukraine’s air defenses. The funds will be allocated to advanced air defense systems and ammunition, both identified as urgent needs by Ukrainian authorities. An additional $14 million will be directed to a NATO-administered fund that facilitates the transfer of U.S. defense materials to Ukraine. This brings Sweden’s total contributions to the fund to $552 million, marking one of its largest commitments to Kyiv’s war effort.
The Swedish Civil Defence and Resilience Agency will oversee the transportation of the boats, ensuring their handover to Ukrainian forces. The dual package reflects Sweden’s strategy of addressing both immediate operational needs and long-term defense sustainability for Ukraine.
