Norway Breaks Ground on $530m Ship Tunnel

Norway has awarded a NOK 5.6 billion (NOK 5.6 billion) contract to construct the world’s first full-scale ship tunnel, designed to shield vessels from the deadly storms of the Stadhavet Sea. The 1.7 km tunnel, set to open in 2031, will allow commercial and passenger ships of up to 16,000 gross tonnes to bypass one of the North Atlantic’s most hazardous seaways. The Norwegian Coastal Administration (Kystverket) signed the deal with contractor AF Gruppen, marking the culmination of a plan first proposed in a local newspaper in 1874. The tunnel…
