Reederei Nord promotes two insiders as CEO shifts focus to new ships

John Wessel and Pit Neubert step up to CFO and COO as Kurt Klemme turns to newcastlemax orders at Wuhu Shipyard.

John Wessel and Pit Neubert take on new roles at Reederei Nord’s Hamburg headquarters.

German shipowner Reederei Nord has announced a leadership reshuffle at its Hamburg headquarters, appointing two long-standing executives to key management positions. The changes come as CEO Kurt Klemme shifts focus toward new shipping investments and strategic projects.

John Wessel has been promoted to chief financial officer, a role in which he will oversee the company’s financial operations while continuing as managing director of OOI, Nord Investment. Wessel joined Reederei Nord in 2015 after working in maritime mergers and acquisitions in London. His experience includes developing shipping investments for the Oldendorff family and third-party investors.

Pit Neubert, meanwhile, has been named chief operating officer, responsible for managing the Hamburg-based fleet. Neubert began his career at Reederei Nord as an apprentice in 2007 and has since worked across crewing, chartering, and operations, including a three-and-a-half-year assignment at Hanseatic Unity Chartering’s Singapore office.

New leadership appointments: Reederei Nord

Both Wessel and Neubert will serve as joint managing directors alongside Klemme, who remains CEO but will now dedicate more time to developing new shipping ventures. The leadership changes align with Reederei Nord’s recent expansion into larger bulk carriers, including an order for up to four 211,000 dwt newcastlemax vessels at China’s Wuhu Shipyard. The contract includes two firm units and two options, with deliveries scheduled for 2028 and 2029.

Founded in 1964 by Klaus E. Oldendorff, Reederei Nord operates across dry bulk, container shipping, and tankers, with offices in Hamburg, Amsterdam, and Limassol. The company’s latest moves signal a continued push toward growth in a competitive maritime market.
