The U.S. Navy may soon deploy an autonomous vessel designed to resupply forces in contested waters without relying on ports, airfields, or predictable routes. NightTrain revives the Lighter Aboard Ship (LASH) concept, developed in the 1960s for shallow-water deliveries. Unlike traditional LASH carriers, which transported 40-tonne barges, NightTrain carries watertight, floating ISO containers. This allows it to load and unload cargo without complex hoisting equipment, using an open bay down its centreline similar to a semi-submersible heavy-lift ship.
