Kochi is poised to become a leading global hub for ship repair following a landmark INR 1,800 crore joint venture between Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and Drydocks World Dubai, a subsidiary of DP World.

The newly announced 50:50 joint venture will oversee the development, ownership, and management of an international ship repair and maintenance facility in Kochi. Originally launched in 2024 under CSL’s sole ownership, the facility will now operate as a collaborative effort between India’s largest shipbuilding and repair firm and a globally recognized shipyard operator.

Strategic Partnership to Boost India’s Maritime Capabilities: Ship Repair

The partnership aims to enhance India’s drydocking capabilities, allowing the facility to service both merchant and naval vessels up to 130 metres in length. This expansion aligns with India’s broader push for self-reliance in defence and maritime infrastructure, reducing the country’s dependence on foreign repair hubs.

The joint venture is expected to generate significant employment opportunities while stimulating regional economic growth. By offering competitive repair and maintenance services near major shipping routes, the facility will provide ship owners with a cost-effective alternative to overseas hubs.

Economic and Operational Impact

Officials have highlighted the financial success of the deal, noting that CSL recovered its initial investment in the facility through the transaction while retaining a 50% stake. The collaboration marks India’s first public-private partnership in the ship repair sector, combining global expertise with domestic leadership to position Kochi as a premier maritime services centre.

With the venture now finalized, the focus shifts to expanding operational capacity to accommodate a broader range of vessels, further strengthening India’s maritime defence and commercial shipping capabilities.
