ClassNK Tightens Safety Rules for Hydrogen, Methanol Ships
Japan’s classification society aligns with IMO’s 2026 hydrogen guidelines but goes further.
ClassNK has overhauled its safety guidelines for ships running on hydrogen, methanol, and ethanol, just as orders for alternative-fuelled vessels accelerate. The ‘Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels (Edition 3.1)’ of its Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels now embeds the ‘Interim Guidelines for the Safety of Ships Using Hydrogen as Fuel (MSC.1/Circ.1701)’ and adds critical tools for risk assessment, while plugging gaps left by the IMO on methanol/ethanol tank structures.
The most sweeping changes hit Part D (hydrogen-fuelled ships), where ClassNK has fully adopted the IMO’s Interim Guidelines for the Safety of Ships Using Hydrogen as Fuel (MSC.1/Circ.1701). Beyond regulatory alignment, the update introduces a hydrogen leak-frequency table, a tool shipyards and designers can use to meet the IMO’s safety-assessment demands. ClassNK, which helped draft the IMO guidelines as part of Japan’s delegation, claims the table will let stakeholders ‘proceed with development more rationally’.
Hydrogen: IMO Rules + Leak-Risk Tables
For methanol and ethanol, the revisions target a blind spot: fuel-tank structural strength. While the IMO’s guidelines cover operational safety, they leave physical integrity to classification societies. ClassNK’s new requirements, buried in Part A, now provide explicit standards for tank design, addressing risks from sloshing, corrosion, and thermal stress. The move comes as methanol-fuelled orders surge, with Maersk and CMA CGM among those betting big on the fuel.
ClassNK’s guidelines now consolidate safety standards for five alternative fuels, methanol, ethanol, LPG, ammonia, and hydrogen, into a single framework. The society frames this as a response to the ‘global challenge of reducing GHG emissions’, but the timing is no coincidence: shipowners face a 2030-2050 decarbonisation crunch, and classification societies are racing to offer ‘design-ready’ rules.
By baking in IMO compliance and adding its own leak-frequency data, ClassNK is positioning itself as the go-to for yards and designers, especially in Japan, where hydrogen projects like Kawasaki’s liquefied hydrogen carrier are advancing.

The updates arrive as alternative-fuel orders hit record highs: DNV’s 2026 forecast predicts 30% of newbuild tonnage will use non-fossil fuels by 2030. Yet hydrogen and methanol bring fresh risks, leaks, embrittlement, and untested failure modes. ClassNK’s guidelines, now aligned with the IMO’s latest circular, offer a rare combination: regulatory cover plus practical tools (like the leak tables) to speed up approvals.
