US Navy Gains 9,000-Ton Dry Dock Boost in San Diego

San Diego’s ship repair capacity has taken a major leap forward with the certification of Austal USA’s 9,000 light ton floating dry dock, now operational and already booked for a $10.8 million Navy contract. The 531-foot facility, designed for small surface combatants, is set to transform maintenance efficiency for vessels like the USS Oakland (LCS 24).

Austal USA’s investment in the West Coast facility reflects a strategic response to growing demand for dry dock services in the region. The dry dock, which measures 154 feet in width and has a maximum draft of 36 feet, is equipped with cranes capable of lifting a combined 16 metric tons. Its certification follows extensive collaboration with partners including R.E. Staite Engineering Inc., Chula Vista Electric, and Heger Dry Dock.
