Drammen Port Cuts Berth Delays with Digital Handshake—Here’s How

Norway’s Port of Drammen adopts Portchain Connect to slash berth planning delays through real-time carrier data.

Norway’s Port of Drammen has integrated Portchain Connect, a digital platform designed to streamline berth planning by enabling real-time data exchange between terminals and shipping lines. The system, implemented by terminal operator Greenport Services, aims to reduce delays and improve coordination for vessel arrivals and departures.

The adoption of Portchain Connect introduces two critical upgrades to operations at the port. First, the platform allows Greenport Services to receive automated, real-time updates on vessel schedules and cargo movements directly from carrier systems. Second, it enables the terminal to respond and propose adjustments quickly, ensuring alignment between shipping lines’ schedules and the terminal’s berth plan.

Øystein Amundsen, Ships Agent at Jas Worldwide Norway AS, emphasized the operational benefits: “Efficient planning and close collaboration with shipping lines are essential to delivering reliable port operations. Portchain Connect gives us greater visibility throughout the berth planning process, enabling our teams to coordinate vessel calls more effectively and provide a more predictable service for our customers.”

Key Improvements in Berth Planning

The Port of Drammen, a key freight hub in Norway, plays a significant role in both regional and international supply chains. Thor Thorup, CCO and Co-Founder of Portchain, highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership: “We are pleased to welcome the Port of Drammen to the Portchain Connect network. As one of Norway’s leading ports, its adoption of our platform sets a precedent for improving berth planning efficiency and collaboration with shipping lines.”

The integration is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026, with initial rollout phases beginning within weeks. Industry observers suggest that the success of this initiative could encourage other Scandinavian ports to adopt similar digital solutions, particularly those managing high volumes of container and bulk cargo.
