The *Auspicious Ark*, China’s 10,000-ton hospital ship, docks in Abidjan for a week-long medical mission.

The Chinese Navy’s hospital ship Auspicious Ark has arrived in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, for its first visit to the country. The 10,000-ton vessel will provide medical assistance to local communities as part of Mission Harmony 2026.

The Auspicious Ark docked in Abidjan on October 14, 2026, where it received a warm welcome. Residents gathered at the port, displaying flags of both Côte d’Ivoire and China, while government and military officials, along with China’s ambassador and embassy staff, attended the ceremony. The ship’s crew acknowledged the crowd, marking the beginning of its week-long stay.

After the welcoming event, the Ivorian Navy’s Chief of Staff toured the vessel and met with the medical team to discuss the services to be provided. During its time in Abidjan, the ship will offer medical treatment to locals, with doctors also visiting the Military Hospital and a local university to educate communities on disease prevention.

Arrival and Local Response: China

The Auspicious Ark, commissioned in 2025, is on a 200-day deployment that began in July 2026 from Qingdao, China. The mission includes stops across South Asia and Africa, with Côte d’Ivoire being its latest destination. The ship is equipped with 18 clinical departments and eight operating theaters, staffed by over 100 doctors from the PLA Northern Theater Command Navy and the Naval Medical University.

Before reaching Côte d’Ivoire, the vessel stopped in Guinea from October 3 to October 10, 2026, where it provided medical care both onboard and at the China-Guinea Friendship Hospital. This visit reinforces the diplomatic relationship between China and Côte d’Ivoire, which has been in place since 1983.
