Celebrity Cruises Unveils 20-Ship Fleet: First River Vessel Hits Water

Celebrity Cruises has reached a key milestone in its expansion into European river cruising with the launch of its first vessel, Celebrity Compass. The ship was floated out at Zwijnenburg shipyard in Rotterdam on September 9, marking the completion of its exterior construction and its first contact with water.

The vessel then embarked on an 80-kilometre journey along the river, arriving at TeamCo Shipyard in Heusden three days later. This event sets the stage for the ship’s official debut on the Rhine in August 2027, as the company prepares to enter the river cruise market.

Luxury Meets River Cruising: Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Compass is designed to offer the same level of sophistication as the company’s ocean-going Edge series, adapted for river navigation. The ship will accommodate up to 180 passengers in 86 cabins, divided into five boutique stateroom categories. Each cabin will feature a king-sized bed, ensuring a comfortable stay for guests.

One of the ship’s standout features is the Magic Edge platform, which includes cantilevered dining pods suspended above the water. Celebrity describes this as an industry first for river vessels, allowing passengers to dine while enjoying unobstructed views of the passing scenery. The menu will reflect the local cuisine of the cruise destinations.

The vessel will also include an infinity-edge plunge pool at the rear, open-air bars, and lounges. Familiar venues from Celebrity’s ocean fleet, such as Café al Bacio, Martini Bar, and Sunset Bar, will be available onboard. In total, the ship will offer eight restaurants and bars, more than any other river cruise operator, according to the company.

The ship’s lightweight hull is built for river travel, with a hybrid propulsion system designed to minimize noise and vibration. This design allows Celebrity Compass to navigate the Rhine and Danube smoothly, providing a seamless experience for passengers.

Expansion Plans and Future Fleet

The launch of Celebrity Compass is the first step in Celebrity Cruises’ ambitious river cruise expansion. The company initially announced plans for 10 river ships in 2025, later increasing the total to 20 vessels by 2031. These ships will operate on the Rhine and Danube, with itineraries covering destinations such as Alsace, Budapest, Prague, and Vienna.

Following Celebrity Compass, Celebrity Seeker will also debut in 2027, with both ships already generating strong demand. In 2028, three additional vessels—Celebrity Wanderer, Celebrity Roamer, and Celebrity Boundless—will join the fleet, further establishing Celebrity’s presence in the river cruise market.

Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises, emphasized that the float-out represents a significant achievement in the company’s strategy to combine luxury design, hospitality, and destination-focused experiences in river cruising.
