10-metre gash: MSC boxship crippled in Bremerhaven storm collision

TUI Cruises liner rips 10-metre hole in MSC Victorine’s hull as storm Manja batters Germany’s North Sea coast.

Bremerhaven
Mein Schiff 3 collides with MSC Victorine at Bremerhaven’s Columbuskaje terminal, tearing a 10-metre hole in the containership’s hull.

A storm-driven collision at Germany’s Bremerhaven port has left one of MSC’s largest containerships with a 10-metre hull gash after TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 3 struck its stern during departure.

The incident occurred as Mein Schiff 3, carrying 2,428 passengers and 922 crew, attempted to depart Bremerhaven’s Columbuskaje terminal at 5:10 pm. Strong winds from storm Manja, which was battering Germany’s North Sea coast, pushed the vessel off course despite tug assistance. The cruise ship’s bridge wing clipped the container stacks of the MSC Victorine, a 16,520 TEU containership built in 2023, before tearing a 10-metre section of its hull above the waterline.

Bremen’s port authorities confirmed that no water ingress was detected in the MSC Victorine, though containers and deck structures sustained damage. The cruise ship, meanwhile, lost several lifeboats and their launching equipment, while its outer hull was also compromised. Two tugs assisting the manoeuvre were reportedly damaged, adding to the financial toll of the incident.

Bremen police initially stated that Mein Schiff 3 had struck two containerships, though TUI Cruises later maintained that only one vessel was involved. The 964 TEU MSC Anne F, a Portuguese-registered feeder ship that had arrived from Tangier on October 24, was berthed nearby. Police referenced “minor damage” to the vessel, but its role in the collision remains unclear.

How the collision unfolded in storm Manja: Bremerhaven

The MSC Victorine, which had been scheduled to proceed to Hamburg, remained in Bremerhaven for damage assessments.

For TUI Cruises, the incident has forced the cancellation of Mein Schiff 3’s planned 20-night cruise to the Canary Islands and Morocco. The company issued a statement expressing regret over the decision:

“This decision is extremely difficult for us. We know how much our guests have looked forward to this trip and deeply regret the associated inconveniences. At the same time, we are convinced that this is the only responsible decision to ensure our high safety standards.”

Bremerhaven, one of Germany’s busiest ports, handles over Bremerhavenlion TEU annually and serves as a critical hub for both container and cruise traffic. While tug assistance is standard for large vessels, the collision highlights the challenges of navigating tight manoeuvres in storm conditions, particularly when multiple ships are berthed in close proximity.

Operational fallout and regulatory scrutiny

For the maritime industry, the collision serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities inherent in port operations. Cruise ships, meanwhile, are built for passenger comfort and stability, but their high superstructures can act as sails in strong winds, complicating manoeuvres.

The cancellation of the cruise also highlights the logistical challenges of rebooking thousands of passengers at short notice. TUI Cruises will likely face compensation claims, while the delay could impact future bookings for Mein Schiff 3. For MSC, the incident adds to a growing list of operational disruptions in recent years, including fires, groundings, and collisions, which have strained the carrier’s reputation for reliability.

As investigations continue, industry observers will be watching for recommendations on improving safety protocols at Bremerhaven and other high-traffic ports. The incident may prompt calls for stricter weather-related restrictions on vessel movements, particularly during storm seasons. For now, the focus remains on assessing the damage and ensuring that both the MSC Victorine and Mein Schiff 3 can return to service without further incident.

Passengers affected by the cancellation are advised to monitor updates from TUI Cruises’ official channels for rebooking options and compensation details. The port of Bremerhaven has not yet issued a timeline for the resumption of normal operations, but further disruptions to vessel schedules are expected as repairs proceed.
