Union Maritime doubles down on offshore with Fujian PSV order
UK owner orders two 84-metre platform supply vessels with options for two more, set for delivery in 2028 and 2029.
UK-based shipowner Union Maritime has expanded its offshore support fleet with an order for two platform supply vessels (PSVs) from China’s Fujian Shipbuilding. The company secured options for two additional vessels as part of the agreement, though financial terms were not disclosed.
The contract was finalized during a ceremony celebrating Fujian Shipbuilding’s 160th anniversary. The newbuilds, designated MW656-1 and MW656-2, will measure 84 meters in length and have a deadweight capacity of 4,334 tonnes each. Construction will take place at Fujian Mawei Shipyard, with deliveries scheduled for 2028 and 2029.
Fleet expansion and technical features: platform supply vessels
The order strengthens Union Maritime’s existing relationship with the Chinese shipbuilder, which has previously delivered tankers for the company. The UK firm currently operates a fleet of 185 vessels, including 85 tankers, 15 dry bulk carriers, and six offshore units. Its orderbook also includes 79 newbuilds, among them eight 113,600 dwt LR2 tankers at Fujian Shipbuilding, set for delivery between 2027 and 2029.
COSCO Shipping Holdings
The new PSVs will incorporate advanced features designed for modern offshore operations. Built to Breeze Ship Design’s Z 4409 specifications, the vessels will include battery-hybrid propulsion systems, a moonpool for subsea operations, and accommodation for up to 44 personnel. They are also prepared for the future installation of a 50-tonne Active Heave Compensated crane, which would enhance their versatility for light construction and seismic support tasks.
Broader industry developments
The PSV order was part of a larger series of contracts announced during Fujian Shipbuilding’s anniversary event. The shipyard also secured a deal for sixteen 87,000 dwt multipurpose grain carriers for COSCO Shipping Bulk, reflecting growing demand across multiple maritime sectors.
A representative from Breeze Ship Design commented on the project’s significance: “We are delighted to have secured this contract with Fujian Mawei Shipyard, a shipyard with whom we have developed a strong and successful relationship over several years. Together with Union Vega Offshore, we now look forward to taking the next step and delivering a successful project that we believe can set a new benchmark for the next generation of offshore supply vessels.”
