TTI Algeciras has officially presented its expansion project for Phase B of Isla Verde Exterior to the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA). The initiative involves the development of an additional 160,000 square meters and a planned investment of €150 million, which will allow the terminal to increase its handling capacity by half a million TEUs, reaching a total of 2.1 million TEUs. This investment will be accompanied by an extension of the concession period until the year 2065, significantly strengthening the company’s long-term outlook.
Since receiving its first vessel on May 5, 2010—becoming the first semi-automated terminal in the Mediterranean and Southern Europe—TTI Algeciras has handled nearly 18 million TEUs, a milestone that will be surpassed this year. This performance has helped to consolidate the Port of Algeciras not only as a key transshipment hub in Europe, but also as a critical gateway for import and export flows on the Iberian Peninsula.
Located on the European shore of the Strait of Gibraltar, TTI Algeciras is a strategic terminal for its main shareholders: South Korean shipping company HMM (holding 50% plus one share), and since February 2021, the CMA CGM Group (holding 50% minus one share), a global player in maritime, land, and air logistics solutions, and also its long-standing main customer. Every week, the terminal handles some of the largest container ships in the world, including the HMM Algeciras (23,964 TEU) and CMA CGM’s 23,000 TEU LNG-powered vessels, such as the CMA CGM Jacques Saadé.
“This expansion is the natural evolution of more than a decade of sustained growth and operational and commercial excellence,” said Alonso Luque, CEO of TTI Algeciras. “The project will not only provide the additional physical capacity the terminal needs, but will also enable us to respond to new service opportunities and accommodate larger vessels, while maintaining the flexibility and efficiency that have always defined us.”
Gerardo Landaluce, President of the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras, added: “TTI Algeciras has played a key role in positioning the port internationally. Its common user model, open to multiple shipping lines and alliances, has helped to consolidate Algeciras as a global logistics platform and a strategic tool for boosting import and export flows in Andalusia and Spain. This expansion aligns perfectly with our roadmap to develop sustainable, resilient, and high-capacity maritime infrastructure in the Strait of Gibraltar area.”
