The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), through the National Port Authority (APN), has taken a further step towards strengthening international cooperation in the port sector with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Guatemala’s National Port Commission.
This instrument aims to consolidate cooperation between both port authorities to promote a more modern, efficient and sustainable port system through the development of joint initiatives and the exchange of management experiences.
Under this framework, Peru and Guatemala will coordinate actions in areas such as port governance, energy transition, decarbonisation, waste management, circular economy, digital transformation, innovation, port protection and security, as well as the integration between ports and cities, in accordance with their respective responsibilities and regulatory frameworks.
Exchange of knowledge and port best practices
The ceremony was attended by the President of the APN Board of Directors, Abel Alvarado Huertas; the Director General of Guatemala’s National Port Commission, Leonel Molina Cabrera; and representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The agreement is the result of a technical and institutional coordination process between both organisations, with the support of the Peruvian Foreign Ministry.
As part of this partnership, both countries will promote the exchange of information, technical tools, protocols and best practices, as well as the development of training programmes, workshops, conferences, research initiatives and specialist exchanges to strengthen the capabilities of the port sector.
Towards more competitive and future-ready ports
Through this initiative, the MTC strengthens Peru’s presence in international port cooperation frameworks and promotes the adoption of standards that contribute to improving the competitiveness of the National Port System.
The collaboration will also support the development of port infrastructure capable of responding to the new challenges of maritime trade, global logistics and the sustainable transformation of the sector.
