Gulf War Traps Antarctic Liner—Expedition Firm Forced to Scrap Iconic Ship

Terra Nova Expeditions abandons the historic St. Helena after it becomes stranded in the Persian Gulf due to regional.

The St. Helena, once a lifeline to a remote Atlantic island, now sits idle in Dubai amid regional conflict.

The historic liner St. Helena, once the lifeline to a remote Atlantic island, has been abandoned by its Antarctic expedition charterer after becoming trapped in the Persian Gulf by the escalating regional conflict. Terra Nova Expeditions, the start-up behind the 2026-27 polar season, confirmed this week it has scrapped plans to use the 6,800 gross-ton vessel and secured a last-minute replacement, Terra Nova Adventurer, a 6,333 GT former Baltic ferry with decades of Arctic experience.

The St. Helena, built at the UK’s Appledore Shipyard in 1990, spent nearly three decades as one of the last Royal Mail Ships, ferrying passengers and supplies between Cape Town and the island of Saint Helena, more than 1,100 miles west of Africa. Retired in 2018 after air service rendered her obsolete, the 344-foot (105-metre) vessel found a second life as a floating armory in the Gulf of Oman before being acquired by the electric car-racing series Extreme E, which renovated her in 2022, retrofitting engines and refurbishing cabins.

Terra Nova Expeditions emerged in 2025 with a bold plan: charter the St. Helena for Antarctic voyages, beginning with a December 2026 departure. But the ship, now registered in Djibouti, has been stuck near Port Rashid in the United Arab Emirates since mid-2026, unable to reposition safely amid the Gulf War. AIS data confirms her last reported position remains within the conflict zone, making any southbound transit a high-risk proposition.

The St. Helena was more than just a ship, she was a cultural icon. After her decommissioning, she narrowly avoided the scrapyard, first serving as a floating armory in the Gulf of Oman before Extreme E purchased her in 2022.

When Terra Nova Expeditions announced in 2025 that it had chartered the St. The first voyage was slated for December 2026, with subsequent seasons planned through 2028/29.

Helena stranded in Dubai. “The situation in the region made it impossible to reposition St. Helena in time for the start of our Antarctic season,” the company stated in a release. “We had no choice but to seek an alternative.&quot.

Terra Nova Adventurer: A Baltic Ferry with Polar Pedigree: Expedition

The replacement vessel, Terra Nova Adventurer, is no stranger to icy waters. Built in 1972 as a passenger car ferry in the Baltic, she was later converted for expedition cruising in 2008 and spent years operating in the Arctic and Antarctic under the names Expedition and G Expedition for the Canadian firm G Adventures. Now registered in Liberia as Vestland Adventurer, she was laid up before Terra Nova Expeditions secured a three-year charter.

While the Terra Nova Adventurer lacks the quirky charm of the St. Helena, she brings a proven track record in polar expeditions. Terra Nova Expeditions plans to enhance her onboard experience ahead of the first season, including new soft furnishings, a remodeled bar and lounge, and the addition of a Jacuzzi and sauna on Deck 5. The company emphasised that the Antarctic itineraries and expedition programs would proceed as planned, with the first voyage still set for December 2026.

“The result will combine the vessel’s established expedition credentials with a refreshed onboard experience aligned with Terra Nova Expeditions’ approach to small-ship polar travel.”

Terra Nova Expeditions·Expedition Operator
