Regional Cooperation and NATO Commitments: Black Sea
The acquisition follows a July NATO meeting where Bulgaria, Romania, and Türkiye agreed to establish a joint task force to clear the Black Sea of floating mines. These explosives pose a threat to commercial shipping and critical infrastructure, including pipelines and underwater cables.
The three nations, along with Ukraine, Georgia, and Russia, had previously formed a task force in 2022 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to address mine risks in the strategic waterway. The new minehunters will reinforce Bulgaria’s existing fleet of three similar vessels, significantly expanding its demining capabilities.
Bulgarian Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov underscored the importance of the deal, stating that the additional ships would enhance the country’s ability to secure the Black Sea. A memorandum of understanding between Bulgaria, Belgium, and the Netherlands also includes provisions for joint crew training, spare parts, and additional equipment to maintain operational readiness.
