OrbitMI, a software-as-a-service company based in New York, has introduced a new cloud-based system called Orbit Reporter, specifically designed to improve the operational efficiency of LNG (liquefied natural gas) carriers. As the LNG sector experiences unprecedented growth, the need for enhanced efficiency and compliance with environmental standards has become increasingly critical. OrbitMI’s innovative solution is set to address these challenges head-on.

The LNG shipping sector faces unique operational challenges, particularly in the context of carbon intensity indicator (CII) assessments. Although LNG is considered a more climate-friendly hydrocarbon and an essential transition fuel, many LNG carriers may receive poor ratings in CII evaluations. This paradox arises because, despite their environmentally favorable cargo, the operational aspects of these vessels—such as fuel efficiency and methane emissions—are often suboptimal.

OrbitMI’s Orbit Reporter seeks to bridge this gap by providing more effective noon and event reporting through its cloud-based platform. This timing is crucial, given the current state of the industry: with a record 371 vessels on order, representing over half of the existing 683-ship deep-sea fleet, according to shipbroker Ifchor Galbraiths, the sector is poised for significant expansion. However, most of these new vessels will be built to conventional designs that may not adequately address methane emissions, presenting a substantial challenge to operators.

The Orbit Reporter system tackles key issues such as through-voyage cargo handling and boil-off gas management, both of which are critical to optimizing the efficiency of LNG carriers. The system integrates a variety of sensors that collect data on cargo conditions, engine performance, gas operating conditions, LNG inventory, water usage for steam plants, send-out reports, and emissions calculations. By consolidating this data, Orbit Reporter enables operators to make informed decisions that enhance the vessel’s efficiency and compliance with environmental regulations.

New Data Management Tool Aims to Address Carbon Intensity and Operational Challenges

OrbitMI CEO Ali Riaz emphasized the importance of this holistic approach to LNG operations, stating, “Optimizing LNG operations for environmental performance requires an approach considering the entire voyage lifecycle, including fuel usage decisions, management of methane slip, and compliance with regulations.” He further noted that by embracing the complexities of LNG shipping and leveraging advanced technologies and analytics, operators can transform environmental challenges into opportunities.

Orbit Reporter is also customizable, allowing it to be tailored to the specific monitoring needs of both LNG carriers and floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs). This flexibility is crucial for meeting the diverse compliance and performance requirements of different vessels within the LNG sector.

The launch of Orbit Reporter comes at a time when the LNG industry is under increasing pressure to improve its environmental performance. As the global demand for LNG continues to rise, driven by its role as a transitional fuel in the shift towards cleaner energy, the ability to operate these carriers efficiently and within regulatory frameworks becomes ever more important. OrbitMI’s new system is poised to play a key role in helping the LNG sector meet these challenges, providing operators with the tools they need to optimize performance and reduce environmental impact.

As the industry moves forward, the adoption of advanced data management systems like Orbit Reporter will likely become essential for LNG carriers aiming to stay competitive and compliant in a rapidly evolving market. With its comprehensive approach to monitoring and optimizing LNG operations, OrbitMI’s new offering is set to make a significant impact on the efficiency and sustainability of the LNG shipping sector.
