The Moroccan port of Tanger Med consolidates its position as a leader in the Mediterranean by surpassing for the first time the milestone of 10 million containers (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit, TEU) handled in a single year. According to the Port Authority, a total of 10,241,392 TEUs were handled in 2024, representing an 18.8% increase compared to 2023.
Tanger Med attributes this success to “the trust of port operators and shipping lines, as well as the high productivity levels of the teams operating at the port”. Additionally, the expansion of facilities, the incorporation of new equipment, and the optimization of maritime calls have significantly reduced waiting and maneuvering times.
The total tonnage handled by the port also experienced a significant increase, reaching 142 million tons (Mt) of cargo, marking a 16.2% growth compared to the previous year. This result reinforces Tanger Med’s strategic role in global maritime trade. In terms of ro-ro traffic, the port handled a total of 516,842 trucks, an 8.1% increase compared to 2023, driven mainly by a 6.8% increase in industrial goods traffic and a 7.2% rise in agri-industrial products.
Passenger traffic also showed positive growth. A total of 3,047,387 people passed through the Moroccan port in 2024, reflecting a 13.0% increase compared to the previous year. The Operation Paso del Estrecho (known as Marhaba by Moroccans) this past summer “was carried out under optimal conditions”, according to the Port Authority.
Regarding new vehicle traffic, the two specialized terminals handled a total of 600,872 units, showing a 4.0% growth compared to 2023. Of this figure, 368,843 vehicles were exported from Renault factories in Melloussa and SOMACA in Casablanca, while 170,519 units came from Stellantis’ plant in Kenitra. Additionally, 34,100 vehicles were handled in transshipment traffic, and 27,410 additional units were imported.
The solid bulk traffic remained stable, reaching a total of 584,945 tons, representing a slight 1.0% increase. Meanwhile, the volume of hydrocarbons decreased by 22.0%, down to 7,640,524 tons. According to the Tanger Med Port Authority, this decline is due to the transfer of part of the imports to new storage facilities in other Moroccan ports.
In terms of maritime calls, the port recorded 17,479 in 2024, a 3.4% increase compared to the previous year. Among these, 1,217 mega-ships longer than 290 meters called at the port, representing a 13.7% increase compared to 2023.
