Shanghai, the world’s largest container port, has taken a significant step in boosting its operational capacity with the completion of the first phase of a new state-of-the-art automated container terminal at Luojing port. This advanced terminal adds a design capacity of 2.6 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) per year, further cementing Shanghai’s position as a critical hub in global maritime trade.

Construction of the terminal began in December 2022, and it now features one 100,000-tonnes-class container berth along with four 10,000-tonnes-class container berths. This new facility has been developed on the site of former coal and ore terminals, which were decommissioned in 2017 and 2019 due to their high pollution levels and relatively low economic value. The transformation of this area into a modern, automated terminal represents a significant shift toward more sustainable and efficient port operations.

Gu Jinshan, chairman of Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), highlighted the strategic importance of the new terminal. “The new capacity will further expand Shanghai port’s container throughput capability, enhance transportation efficiency with improved competitiveness, and help SIPG better serve economic and trading activities along the Yangtze River and China’s coastal areas,” he stated. This expansion is expected to significantly bolster Shanghai’s role in supporting China’s economic growth and its integration into the global supply chain.

In addition to the current development, the second phase of the Luojing container port project has also commenced. This phase aims to further enhance the port’s capacity and solidify its status as a premier shipping hub. The ongoing development of the Luojing terminal is part of a broader strategy to maintain and expand Shanghai’s lead in the competitive global shipping industry.

In 2023, Shanghai port handled a staggering 49 million TEU, reaffirming its position as the busiest container port worldwide. The new automated terminal at Luojing is expected to contribute significantly to this figure in the coming years, enabling Shanghai to handle increasing volumes of global trade with greater efficiency.

The automated systems at the Luojing terminal include advanced technologies designed to optimize container handling processes, reduce turnaround times, and minimize human error. By integrating these cutting-edge technologies, SIPG aims to set new standards in port operations, making Shanghai not only the largest but also one of the most technologically advanced ports globally.

As the global shipping industry continues to evolve, the expansion and modernization of facilities like the Luojing terminal are essential for maintaining competitiveness. Shanghai’s investment in automation and capacity expansion reflects its commitment to staying at the forefront of global maritime trade. With the completion of both phases of the Luojing project, Shanghai port is well-positioned to handle future increases in cargo volumes and continue playing a pivotal role in international logistics.
