SHARE

22·01·2025 – The Port of Pilbara, located in the state of Western Australia, has awarded ACCIONA the construction of two piers as part of the Lumsden Point development project in Port Hedland, the second most populous city in the Pilbara region.

This multi-user development will support the export of critical minerals such as lithium and copper concentratesfrom nearby mines; the import of renewable energy infrastructure, including wind turbines and blades; and facilitate the rapid growth of direct shipping services to the Pilbara region.

ACCIONA has extensive experience in port infrastructure, including the construction of a breakwater to shelter the new floating terminal for industrial use at the Port of Ravenna (Italy), the container terminal for the northern expansion of the Port of Valencia—recently awarded—the second phase of the new container terminal at the Port of Cádiz, the expansion of the attached dock at the Port of Barcelona, the construction of the Port of Ferrol, and the Port of Açu (Brazil).

LOCAL LEADERSHIP

ACCIONA established its presence in Australia in 2002 and has since become one of the country’s leading infrastructure companies.

In 2009, the company was awarded one of its most iconic projects in Australia, the Adelaide Desalination Plant. With a daily capacity of 300,000 m³, the plant was a pioneer in the country by incorporating an advanced pretreatment systemto improve energy efficiency and increase the recovery of treated water for human consumption. In 2011, ACCIONAsecured its first water project in Western Australia, involving the design, construction, operation, and maintenanceof the Mundaring Water Treatment Plant, which supplies water to the Goldfields, one of the state’s nine regions.

Other major projects in the country include the design, construction, operation, and 10-year maintenance of the Alkimos Desalination Plant in Perth; the construction of the eastern section of the HumeLink electrical transmission line in New South Wales; and the design and construction of the Western Harbour Tunnel, valued at approximately AU$4.24 billion (€2.746 billion)—the largest construction contract in ACCIONA’s history.

Additional major contracts in Australia include the completion of the runway construction for the new Western Sydney International Airport (Nancy Bird Walton); the central section of Sydney Metro West, a new underground railway spanning much of the country’s largest city; and the removal of level crossings on the Frankston, Hurstbridge, and Werribee railway lines in Melbourne.
